The last time I went to church

I went because my husband wanted to. I do love him and who doesn’t love an uplifting sermon right? It was a very large church. They had a special guest so it was really crowded. We heard in. At the very front they had a LOT of tables of merchandise and a coffee bar. Different people selling christian jewelry. The guest’s books, cd’s, other things. I was shocked. In my head I was thinking WTF? Isn’t this the same thing Jesus got so mad about that he freaked out and started flipping over tables in church?
I shrugged it off bought a cookie and went in to find a seat.
After he talked a little while about how he was rooting for the saints to win he started to tell a long story. He started about how he used to be poor and ate mac n cheese a lot, but now he has money and everything is great. Then he started talking about his also wealthy neighbor has so much fun blowing all his cash and he enjoys looking at all the neat man toys he brings home. Then he told the story of the prodigal son. Except in his version the moral of that story is it was ok to blow all your money because It’s fun and Jesus will love you anyways and take care of you when you have nothing. Also made a comment about passing around the collection plate.
This again upset me since I always thought the point of that story was to NOT be the jerk who pissed away all his money, but to forgive some one if they did. How is this not pissing people off? He is obviously trying to get money from people who have less money then him! I wanted to scream that Jesus said it was harder to for a rich man to get into heaven then it is to get a camel through the eye of a needle! But he doesn’t come to my house and tell me how to do my job and I think the mob of his followers might not be as peaceful as Jesus was. It just blew my mind! He got up and bragged about how much he had, but we needed to give money to the church and buy his books and tapes. He actually made a point to talk about how wonderful his new book was and how we needed to read it!
Don’t get me wrong I’m not hating on the guy for wanting money. I would love to have ass loads of cash. I just can’t believe that man who is suppose to be teaching people about Jesus was just the opposite of what was wrote about Jesus. On top of that his message was also pretty much the opposite of the bibles. I don’t remember Jesus being a rich wasteful person. Unless you count giving what you have to the poor as wasteful. These people were still just eating it up.
Needless to say I was disappointed. I don’t know where I was going with this I guess it was just another rant.

  1. That stinks that you had that experience. I guess there will always be people trying to make a buck off other people's guilt and gullibility. I just wish it wasn't in the name of someone who really wasn't like that at all. What a shame what some people have done in the name of Jesus. I'm sure he's not happy about it, either. Thankfully there are many churches where people talk about the true gospel of love.
